Educators, parents, policy-makers, and communities across the country will find this a significant addition to American educational literature and a gold mine of both current information and detailed historical facts. Latinos in the United States have fought hard to attain equality, especially in the field of education. This book focuses on the fight for equal educational access. The contributors reveal that many Latino children still face decades-old challenges. In addition to such obstacles as cultural conflicts and racism, they also face teachers, curricula, and assessments that are not always respectful to their backgrounds. Three major questions form the framework for this landmark work: How can schools address issues of educational equity for Latino students in the United States? How can curricula be reformed to address the needs of these students? How can scholars, community activists, and parents collaborate for the benefit of Latino learners in the United States?

Fiction. Latino/Latina Studies. Daniel Venegas's novel -- first published in Los Angeles in 1928, and long lost to the public -- portrays, with wit tempered by empathy, the harsher aspects of America during the fabled Jazz Age. With bawdy humor and razor-sharp insight, THE ADVENTURES OF DON CHIPOTE relates the hapless journey of the poor rural farmer Don Chipote de JesAAs MarAAa DomAAnguez, who naively leaves behind his wife and children in Mexico to seek riches in the United States -- where, he is assured, one can sweep up gold dust from the streets and suck the nectar from the tree of life. The author's earthy satire is faithfully rendered by translator Ethriam Cash Brammer; edited and introduced by NicolAA s Kanellos.

The Devil in Silicon Valley

This sweeping history explores the growing Latino presence in the United States over the past two hundred years. It also debunks common myths about Silicon Valley, one of the world's most influential but least-understood places. Far more than any label of the moment, the devil of racism has long been Silicon Valley's defining force, and Stephen Pitti argues that ethnic Mexicans--rather than computer programmers--should take center stage in any contemporary discussion of the 'new West.' Pitti weaves together the experiences of disparate residents--early Spanish-Mexican settlers, Gold Rush miners, farmworkers transplanted from Texas, Chicano movement activists, and late-twentieth-century musicians--to offer a broad reevaluation of the American West. Based on dozens of oral histories as well as unprecedented archival research, The Devil in Silicon Valley shows how San José, Santa Clara, and other northern California locales played a critical role in the ongoing development of Latino politics. This is a transnational history. In addition to considering the past efforts of immigrant and U.S.-born miners, fruit cannery workers, and janitors at high-tech firms--many of whom retained strong ties to Mexico--Pitti describes the work of such well-known Valley residents as César Chavez. He also chronicles the violent opposition ethnic Mexicans have faced in Santa Clara Valley. In the process, he reinterprets not only California history but the Latino political tradition and the story of American labor. This book follows California race relations from the Franciscan missions to the Gold Rush, from the New Almaden mine standoff to the Apple janitorial strike. As the first sustained account of Northern California's Mexican American history, it challenges conventional thinking and tells a fascinating story. Bringing the past to bear on the present, The Devil in Silicon Valley is counter-history at its best.

Home Team

In 1957 Horace Stoneham took his Giants of New York baseball team and headed west, starting a gold rush with bats and balls rather than pans and mines. But San Francisco already had a team, the Seals of the Pacific Coast League, and West Coast fans did not immediately embrace the newcomers. Starting with the franchise's earliest days and following the team up to recent World Series glory, Home Team chronicles the story of the Giants and their often topsy-turvy relationship with the city of San Francisco. Robert F. Garratt shines light on those who worked behind the scenes in the story of West Coast baseball: the politicians, businessmen, and owners who were instrumental in the club's history. Home Team presents Stoneham, often left in the shadow of Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, as a true baseball pioneer in his willingness to sign black and Latino players and his recruitment of the first Japanese player in the Major Leagues, making the Giants one of the most integrated teams in baseball in the early 1960s. Garratt also records the turbulent times, poor results, declining attendance, two near-moves away from California, and the role of post-Stoneham owners Bob Lurie and Peter Magowan in the Giants' eventual reemergence as a baseball powerhouse. Garratt's superb history of this great ball club makes the Giants' story one of the most compelling of all Major League franchises. Robert F. Garratt is emeritus professor of English and humanities at the University of Puget Sound. He has published books and articles on modern Irish literature including the recent Trauma and History in the Irish Novel: The Return of the Dead. His baseball articles have appeared in NINE and the SABR BioProject.

Faces of America

As a nation of immigrants, the American experience is vibrantly defined by the diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious heritage of its people. Perhaps because so many of their ancestors migrated to this country relatively recently, Americans are especially concerned with their family trees, carving out personal histories by combing through documents such as wills and estate records, federal and state censuses, and private family papers, and mining the stories and tales handed down to them by their forebears. Since 2007, the Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., has been helping African Americans find long-buried details about their ancestors by researching their family trees and then, when the paper trail ends, by analyzing their DNA and marrying that information to a wealth of historical data. Now, in Faces of America Gates explores the family trees of twelve of America's most recognizable and extraordinary citizens, individuals who learn that they are of Asian, English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Jamaican, Jewish, Latino, Native American, Swiss, and Syrian ancestry: Inaugural poet Elizabeth Alexander, chef Mario Batali, comedian and television personality Stephen Colbert, writer Louise Erdrich, writer Malcolm Gladwell, actress Eva Longoria, cellist Yo Yo Ma, writer and director Mike Nichols, former monarch of Jordan Queen Noor, surgeon and author Dr. Mehmet Oz, actress Meryl Streep, and Olympic gold medalist and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. In addition, each of the subjects in Faces of America underwent dense genotyping to trace their genetic ancestry on their father's line, their mother's line, and their percentages of European, Asian, Native American, and African ancestry. Faces of America unfolds as a riveting journey into our country's complex ancestral past. Readers will share in the surprise and delight, the shock and sadness of these twelve individuals themselves as Gates unveils their rich family stories, traced back to their arrival on America's shores, and beyond, deep into the history of their ancestors' countries of origin. America, as Gates shows us, is a nation of many historical threads, interwoven and united in the present moment. In this compelling book, Gates demonstrates that where we come from profoundly and fundamentally informs who we are today.

Introducing Jonathan Gold; he was humorous, happy-go-lucky, super-athletic, unusually handsome and warm-hearted; he naively thought he had it made, he thought everything was pulling together for his college future, going his way; soon to be decorated high school Sports Grad, class of 1982, those fabulous football scholarships kept coming in for the asking, all at his taking lining up, maybe even a great job at the Gym/Dojo he belonged to; it seemed ridiculous; how could something like this actually happen to him? He, with all his martial arts trophy training and unheard of glorified health, how could he be shockingly shanghaied, subdued and shafted from his own bedroom in the middle of the night without being able to defend himself? Well, it sure did happen, and to him. And then, waking up in a floppy fog, to see a husky, hulking, hairy kidnapper Bruce and his lovely latino-looking lady doctor Sheila, his cohort asking him such odd nonsensical personal questions? Was it just some haphazard undercover mix-up, a big, glaring mistake? It gets even stranger for him when he winds up once more waking up after a harrowing, burning ring caper to see the most gorgeous gal, Selene, staring down at him, one with such beautiful violet-hued eyes and platinum hair, just as he had? Was it just a dream? Yet what they were being told about themselves by these mysterious abductors made it even more bizarre- and it takes an even more unbelievable turn when they are forced to take a very far, far away trip- and Jon wakes up even again somewhere else… with a funky piece of feather-light, haloed jewelry on his neck and some tunes and lyrics blaring that begins to change his entire life forever…
