From best-selling author and Emmy Award-winning journalist Jorge Ramos comes a pivotal new book that explores the current and future power of the Latino vote in American politics. The face of the American voter is about to change dramatically. With the growth of the number of Latinos in the United States, there has never been a voting block with the potential to determine the outcome of so many elections, both nationally and locally. Hispanics in America, native-born as well as newly arrived immigrants, will forever alter the way this country votes, and even how the nation views itself. With a staggering population of more than 38 million and growing quickly, Latinos became the largest minority in America in 2003. The monumental effect Hispanics will have on all areas of American culture, especially politics, will be acutely felt as the 2004 presidential election heats up.Ramos argues that the political party that can correctly understand the wants and needs of Hispanics will triumph in most elections throughout the country, pushing forward that party´s agenda and solidifying its hold on power.By outlining what political issues are important to them, Ramos underscores why America should care about bridging the gap of misunderstanding that exists between Latinos and non-Latinos, during this, the most divisive presidential election the country has witnessed in decades. 1. Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish. 1. Spanish. The history of Latinos and Hispanics in the United States is wide-ranging, spanning more than four hundred years and varying from region to region within the United States. The Latino and/or Hispanic presence in the United States is the second longest, after the Native American. Contemporaneously with their explorations and conquests elsewhere in America, most famously those of Hernan Cortes in Mexico and Francisco Pizarro in Peru, Spaniards pioneered the present-day United States, too. Hispanics (whether criollo or mestizo) became the first American citizens in the newly acquired Southwest territory after the Mexican-American War, and remained a majority in several states until the 20th century. As late as 1783, at the end of the American Revolutionary War, Spain held claim to roughly half of today´s continental United States. In the Treaty of Paris, France ceded Louisiana (New France) to Spain from 1763 until it was returned in 1800 by the Treaty of San Ildefonso. In 1775, Spanish ships reached Alaska. From 1819 to 1848, the United States and its army increased the nation´s area by roughly a third at Spanish and Mexican expense, gaining among others three of today´s four most populous states: California, Texas, and Florida. 1. Stranger: The Challenge of a Latino Immigrant i...

There are times when I feel like a stranger in this country. I am not complaining and it´s not for lack of opportunity. But it is something of a disappointment. I never would have imagined that after having spent 35 years in the United States I would still be a stranger to so many. But that´s how it is. Jorge Ramos, an Emmy award-winning journalist, Univision´s longtime anchorman and widely considered the ´´voice of the voiceless´´ within the Latino community, was forcefully removed from an Iowa press conference in 2015 by then-candidate Donald Trump after trying to ask about his plans on immigration. In this personal manifesto, Ramos sets out to examine what it means to be a Latino immigrant, or just an immigrant, in present-day America. With current research and statistics, a journalist nose for a story, and his own personal experience, Ramos shows us the changing face of America while trying to find an explanation for why he, and millions of others, still feel like strangers in this country. ´´It is precisely this pattern of confrontation...that has won Ramos the trust of so many Hispanics. They know that in many countries south of the United States, direct questions can provoke not simply a loss of access but also a loss of life.´´ - Marcela Valdes, The New York Times 1.

´´Remember that we´re in the U.S.,´´ Dante Celestino is told when his daughter runs away. Friends and neighbors warn him that in the U.S. it´s not considered so unusual for a fifteen-year-old girl to run away. Dante had counseled his daughter Emmita to date only Spanish-speaking Hispanics. He told her she should never date someone who joins gangs or makes drug deals. But she ignores her father´s advice and--right in the middle of her quinceanera--runs away with a Latino dressed in black who has tattoos and a shaved head, doesn´t speak Spanish, and rides a lowrider motorcycle. But Dante is illegal, making it impossible to report the girl´s disappearance to the police. And so begins Dante´s odyssey. Accompanied by a lame donkey named Virgilio and the voice of his dead wife, he sets out for Las Vegas, where Emmita´s boyfriend--or abductor, as Dante considers him--supposedly lives. In a journey filled with the pain of nostalgic flashbacks of small-town life and married bliss in Mexico and the joy of music and song, Dante encounters a series of eccentric characters: Josefino and Mariana, known to radio listeners as the Noble Couple, who change their listeners´ luck in an instant; Juan Pablo, a young man who uses his computer genius to rob a Las Vegas casino so he can pay for his college education; and the Pilgrim, a famous balladeer who has crossed the border via underground tunnels so many times that even years later he smells faintly of dirt and death. In this bittersweet tour de force, the First and Third Worlds join hands, and Mexican pueblo life and Internet post-modernity dance together in one of the most memorable fables to shed light on issues such as immigration, culturalassimilation, and the future of the United States with its ever-increasing Latino population.
