Victor Rios grew up in the ghetto of Oakland, California, in the 1980s and ´90s. A former gang member and juvenile delinquent, Rios managed to escape the bleak outcome of many of his friends and earned a PhD at Berkeley and returned to his hometown to study how inner-city young Latino and African American boys develop their sense of self in the midst of crime and intense policing. Punished examines the difficult lives of these young men, who now face punitive policies in their schools, communities, and a world where they are constantly policed and stigmatized. Rios followed a group of 40 delinquent black and Latino boys for three years. These boys found themselves in a vicious cycle, caught in a spiral of punishment and incarceration as they were harassed, profiled, watched, and disciplined at young ages, even before they had committed any crimes, eventually leading many of them to fulfill the destiny expected of them. But beyond a fatalistic account of these marginalized young men, Rios finds that the very system that criminalizes them and limits their opportunities sparks resistance and a raised consciousness that motivates some to transform their lives and become productive citizens. 1. There are times when I feel like a stranger in this country. I am not complaining and it´s not for lack of opportunity. But it is something of a disappointment. I never would have imagined that after having spent 35 years in the United States I would still be a stranger to so many. But that´s how it is. Jorge Ramos, an Emmy award-winning journalist, Univision´s longtime anchorman and widely considered the ´´voice of the voiceless´´ within the Latino community, was forcefully removed from an Iowa press conference in 2015 by then-candidate Donald Trump after trying to ask about his plans on immigration. In this personal manifesto, Ramos sets out to examine what it means to be a Latino immigrant, or just an immigrant, in present-day America. With current research and statistics, a journalist nose for a story, and his own personal experience, Ramos shows us the changing face of America while trying to find an explanation for why he, and millions of others, still feel like strangers in this country. ´´It is precisely this pattern of confrontation...that has won Ramos the trust of so many Hispanics. They know that in many countries south of the United States, direct questions can provoke not simply a loss of access but also a loss of life.´´ - Marcela Valdes, The New York Times 1. From best-selling author and Emmy Award-winning journalist Jorge Ramos comes a pivotal new book that explores the current and future power of the Latino vote in American politics. The face of the American voter is about to change dramatically. With the growth of the number of Latinos in the United States, there has never been a voting block with the potential to determine the outcome of so many elections, both nationally and locally. Hispanics in America, native-born as well as newly arrived immigrants, will forever alter the way this country votes, and even how the nation views itself. With a staggering population of more than 38 million and growing quickly, Latinos became the largest minority in America in 2003. The monumental effect Hispanics will have on all areas of American culture, especially politics, will be acutely felt as the 2004 presidential election heats up.Ramos argues that the political party that can correctly understand the wants and needs of Hispanics will triumph in most elections throughout the country, pushing forward that party´s agenda and solidifying its hold on power.By outlining what political issues are important to them, Ramos underscores why America should care about bridging the gap of misunderstanding that exists between Latinos and non-Latinos, during this, the most divisive presidential election the country has witnessed in decades. 1. ´´What you will read in these pages is a story about a tough young man who lost his way, and the story of a loving God who never forgot Casey, no matter where he was.” (Nicky Cruz, former New York gang leader and best-selling author of Run Baby Run)The Shot Caller is both a never-to-be-forgotten insider’s look at the violent world of gangs and prison life and a powerful, modern demonstration of how God will go to the most miraculous extremes to reach even the worst sinners.Casey Diaz came to this country when he was just two years old, the oldest son of El Salvadorian immigrants who settled in the barrios near downtown Los Angeles in the 1970s. An abusive family life propelled Casey into street gangs at the age of eleven and he rose quickly within the ranks of the Rockwood Street Locos to become their leader. At sixteen he was arrested and sentenced to nearly 13 years in a state prison for second-degree murder and 52 counts of robbery and placed in solitary confinement for twenty-three hours a day. When an elderly woman committed to prison ministry approaches his cell and tells him Jesus loves him and God is going to use him, Casey scoffs at her. Then, one day a supernatural event takes place causing Casey to hit the cell floor and weep. He knows this is almighty God speaking to him, confesses his many sins, expresses deep remorse, and accepts Christ. What happens next can only be described as a miracle. This gritty memoir is perfect for fans of the international best seller The Cross and the Switchblade and any listener looking for an astounding example of God’s grace and redemption. 1.
