Land of Careful Shadows by award-winning author Suzanne Chazin is a powerful mystery full of passion and secrets that deals with a clash of cultures and familial relationships, and it's full of drama, mystery, and raw emotions. When the dead body of a Latino woman is found in a reservoir about 50 miles north of Manhattan, with a photo of a baby in her purse nearby, the police try to determine who the child is and if it is still alive. Along with the photo, they also find a disturbing note in the purse: "Go back to your country. You don't belong here." Homicide detective Jimmy Vega is Latino too, so he knows how hard it can be for an outsider to fit into a close-knit town like Lake Holly. Vega is a highly respected officer of the law, and he is challenged and intrigued by Adele Figueroa, a passionate defender of immigrants' rights. Vega must rethink everything he believes in order to uncover the truths about his town, his family, and himself. Land of Careful Shadows is a tour de force of literary suspense and an intimate journey into the human heart. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Armando Durán. Luis Fuentes has always been sheltered from the gang violence that nearly destroyed his brothers' lives. But that didn't stop him from taking risks - whether he's scaling a mountain in the Rockies or dreaming of a future as an astronaut, Luis can't stop looking for the next thrill. Nikki Cruz lives her life by three rules - boys lie to get their way, don't trust a boy who says "I love you", and never date a boy from the south side of Fairfield. Her parents may be from Mexico, but as a doctor's daughter, she has more in common with her north-side neighbors than the Latino Blood at her school. Then she meets Luis at Alex's wedding, and suddenly, she's tempted to break all her rules. Getting Nikki to take a chance on a south sider is Luis' biggest challenge, until he finds himself targeted by Chuy Soto, the new head of the Latino Blood. When Chuy reveals a disturbing secret about Luis' family, the youngest Fuentes finds himself questioning everything he's ever believed to be true. Will his feelings for Nikki be enough to stop Luis from entering a dark and violent world and permanently living on the edge? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Roxanne Hernandez, Blas Kisic. ...Processes of Creating, Maintaining, and Believing in "Home." This text offers a glance at the interplay of globalization, migration, and the agricultural economic sector of North Carolina through the lens of "home." Immigration is often considered in terms of cost/benefits to the society or nation, statistics and theory easily sterilize and negate the humanity of the very immigrants that they describe. The stories within this text were gleaned during a time when immigration was rapidly increasing in the Southeast, North Carolina, specifically, was within the top five states with the highest percentage increase of Latinos in 2009. In providing these stories, interviews with North Carolina migrant farmworkers and the head of a farmworker aid agency, the bare bones of data are fleshed out and a point of unison between domestic and immigrant cultures is identified: the quest, desire, and sacrifice of and for "home."
